Media education
There is a line between proactive journalism and responsible journalism. Indian media is yet to learn that. In todays' terror attack in mumbai following are the stupid media comments that CNN IBN made. The media house was clearly informed that terrorists were tracking the ground happenings via 24x7 channels. Still :
1) Start of the operation against terrorists were clearly mentioned forewarning the terrorists in Oberoi hotel
2) The clear description of escaped hostages from Nariman point
3) Boasting that hostage people were telling lies about their nationality to save their skins
4) Forming a group just outside oberoi hotel with home minister [with in a grenade launch distance]
5) Informing that home minister is about to enter oberoi hotel when terrorists were still there.
This live streaming sucks utterly. These guys make sensation out of everything, even a human tragedy.. darn them

Salutations
to the mumbai top cops who left for the other world yesterday. It was a great shock to lose three acclaimed officers in a short span to terrorist attacks. The decorated officers !!! It should have been a blow to the police force and their near and dear... May their souls rest in peace and protect the city they loved...
On the other hand, it is a lesson in couter terrorism : Never put all your eggs in a single basket
The terrorists seem to have learnt the lesson of : Hit hard once and dont give a second chance

Its been a great experience studying the college and transitioning to company. We all faced the initial jitters when joining the company and hence after few years of a relatively good start, I thought lets go help our juniors @ colleges across. A web platform to reach out to the guys out there and also to enable the better communication was launched : www.opengyan.com
It is just a first step and breaking lots of inhibitions, myself and a good pal of mine took the step to test the waters. It is open for comments. I know you have thoughts of how to make it bigger and better. Do let me know.
If you want to contribute [Well not the money ;) ] these are the areas we are looking out for :
1) Spread the word
2) Write articles for OG
3) Guide us along the journey.
Do visit the site : www.opengyan.com and pass on the comments.

One more thing to consider @ office is to follow NAM :). Get away from office politics altogether. Bootlicking, back stabbing do help to get phenomenol short term gains. But just think what happens if you change team or your manager jumps the company. One will be in deep trouble then. Negotiation, flexibility and swift thinking are needed. But that does not require one to be a bully boy nor a "yes boss". Just strike a balance most of the times and it should be fine...
Well the other point is come out of college life. Hi, "office / business talk" , bye, let these be the guiding states while talking to peers of opposite sex. It is not the college life where you just become friends upon first sight. Not anymore. It starts unwanted gossips which results in unwanted diversions. Once you build the rapport friendship builds. Just dont jump right away !! Friendship is a long journey to be begun hastily...
Ciao

The first time I came in I thought crap, I need to prove a point to myself. The idea of having a role model for oneself never appealed to me. Iam unique and so is everyone. No one can equal ME and never can I equal Mr.X. But that doesnt mean I have to boast myself to the hilt. There are and will always be a better person than me around me. Humility is a characteristic one has to constantly remind oneself. Thala ganam koodadhu. It is but natural to feel proud. Pride is needed but humbleness should always be there. In front of peers and elders, be humble. But that doesnt mean you have to be in a shell always. When questioned, just blow the opposition to smithereens. I just remember two historic instances.
The first one is with Thirumangai alwar. He was a saint, a poet par excellence. Humble. But there was an instance when he was questioned about his poetic skills. It just so triggered that he lined off all his titles in the song and it just ran to four lines....
The second one was with a weaver in a kingdom was taken to the court. He was charged at not having attended the village compulsory education school. There right at the court he just humbly composed a poem..

There are two contradicting styles of handling things. Never to over do or to under do them. I had always tried to follow few things.
1) Say sorry in the open. It adds to the earnestness.
2) Wish someone personally and not as a group. It adds to sincerity in the wish.
3) Praise others genuinely not a fulsome praise.
4) If your team mate, dont hit him / her when [s]he is down.
5) If an adversary, dont hit him / her when [s]he is out.
6) Avoid blaming a person unnecessarily.
7) Be truthful to yourself.
My dad says : Enter an organization as a pin, become the pillar.

Continuing from the earlier post..
To move up one needs to show that he is ready to take the next higher task. There has to be a balance between finishing off the current work at hand and not to over do oneself and burning ones' hand. I had many times burned my hands for overdoing. Sometimes subtle sometimes not so subtle. One just gets to learn. The point is Finish your task, Step up to next task
The other thing I learnt is that consciously or unconsciously your actions should not make the others look bad. You might be a genius, but that doesn't mean you have to look like one by making the other look dumb. It has to be a principle and consciously one has to do it. The point is : never ever make your Manager / peer look like a fool.

By grace or luck its been an astonishing and outstanding career till now. And I have been asked time and again how do you do it. Well I had not given a thought about it till now, [may be that is one reason] but then thinking back I thought I would jot down few pointers. It is because I feel it will help me moving forward. Pure selfish reasons :)
It was my first year at office and I was really disappointed at having to land in this company. Its all because I did not want to land up in an Indian IT company which at that time was second rated compared to global peers. I love India but never wanted to be second grade. Thankfully I got into a division where in there is real product working rather than just services. So thats point number 1. If you dont like something and forced to take it up, find the good spot in it.
Secondly the point that I considered myself to have landed up in a company which I considered below my expectations, made me undergo sleepless nights. It is that I wanted to prove above all to myself that I am better than the average or above average in this place. I always felt, to earn the first salary equal to my Dads' I have to put in all the efforts he had put in all these years. And if Iam not @ top 5 % then Iam doing a disservice. I said : I should never ever feel guilty of getting the payslip.
Will think more and write more on this..

Lean, Mean M$ Workhorse laid to rest
Windows 3.11 -- I love that. My first exposure to computing world on a PC -XT, more than 12 years ago I would say. Loading a Word 6.0 in to that and playing games like Solitaire ;) Minesweeper in it was great fun. No Blue screen of Death [For I had a B/w monitor :P] and just a three key reboot [ctrl alt del] and it was back to its beautiful state. Lo ! those were the good old days... Now M$ has officially stopped selling 3.11 [Long after Windows 95]. So here goes the requirement spec of this OS :
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 needed at least -- 640KB of RAM, seven megabytes of hard drive space and support for a CGA, EGA and VGA graphics card. It required an 8086/8088 processor or higher, with a clock speed of up to 10MHz
Windows Vista needs : 1 GB RAM, 40 GB of Hard drive space, 128 MB of graphics memory , WDDM Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.

Buh bye 3.11
